what to Wear

Outfits 101

First, I know outfits for family pictures are really scary for some people. I get it. It can be stressful to plan clothing for that many people. But- that's what I'm here for. Keep a few things in mind and I promise it's really hard to mess it up. The people in your photographs are the most important part so, don't stress about the outfits too much! Let's dive right in:

Things to keep in mind

my most important tips

01

Dress for Comfort

Comfort is key. You want to be able to move around and play, run, sit, etc. Stay away from tight, constricting clothes and high heels. That goes for the kids too!

02

Match the setting

This one is huge. If you want the photos to have an authentic look to them, dress appropriate to the location we choose. More on this later.

03

Pick a pallatte

The key to getting colors right is usually just picking one color family and sticking to it: Jewel tones, Pastels, Primary or Earth tones. (Neon colors are not invited.) As long as everyone is in the same pallatte, it will work. Don't be afraid of mixing patterns and textures. It will add visual interest to your photos.

04

Avoid distracting pieces

Logos, writing and footwear. These are the most common culprits. Avoid large logos and writing, and trainer style tennis shoes.

Setting the tone

your clothes are part of the story

This, to me, is the heart of the matter. This is really the only reason wardrobe matters at all. The clothing you choose will add to the over all feel of your images. That's why I think it's important to choose clothes that feel like you. It's also important to consider what you want your photos to convey. Below, I have listed some different ways that your clothing choices can lend to the final look of your images.

Authenticity

When your clothes match your environment, it makes your pictures feel authentic and less dated. Outdoor settings are usually matched best with the reason we choose outdoor settings in the first place: they're timeless. Classic, natural pieces work best in rural settings. In-home sessions usually call for casual or cozy. Downtown or studio should be paired with what drew you to that setting as well. Modern, Edgy, Simple, etc.

Intimacy

This is one of my favorite tips. Part of my work is about capturing the bond between parents and their young children. It's about closeness. One way to convey that with your clothing choices is to choose more casual or simple clothing. Wearing dressy clothes is something for the public if you think about it. So more simple or casual clothing makes your photos look more intimate. Other ways of adding to this theme are going barefoot, wearing natural looking makeup and hairstyles, and wearing understated or fewer accessories.

Harmony

This is probably where most people stress about family picture outfits. But just remember we are looking for balance and harmony. Don't worry about everyone having the "most" perfect outfit. You just need to make sure you all look good together. Once you've achieved that - you're done!
